Virginia's Purse Award
The Virginia's Purse Award will be presented again this year, deadline
for applications is April 30, 2004.
This year's Virginia's Purse
Award went to Rachel Hynson, (5/19/04)
One award of $500.00.
Application Criteria: Student currently enrolled as a Women's Studies
major at KU.
Application Procedure: Nominations may be self-nominations or nominations
from the faculty. The applicant must submit the following materials:
- A cover letter that includes name, address, phone, e-mail and evening
phone.
- Proof of Jr. or Sr. standing and major in WS (Arts form will do)
- A short essay (1-2 pages typed, double-spaced) that discusses your
activism, scholarship, and/or leadership in women's issues.
- A letter of recommendation.

The Friends of Womens Studies at the University of Kansas is a group of concerned
individuals working to :
- Ensure the future of the Women's Studies program at KU
- Raise funds for scholarships and research initiatives
- Facilitate access to WS faculty for the community at large
- Mentor students already involved in the WS program at KU
- Highlight the many contributions made by the WS program
A Brief Herstory in Time
The FoWS have sponsored several events including:
- Ann Garvin, national president of Church Women United; Sharing her first-hand
view of the the Los Angeles riots' aftermath
- Harriet Goldhor Lerner, Menninger Foundation; Speaking on "Lies in
Womens' Lives"
- Faculty lecture series which addressed :
- Self Esteem
- Leadership
- Educational Equity
- Rape
- Live hook-up to share in recognizing the accomplishments made by Women all
over the world since the Beijing conference on the Rights of Women in 1995.
- Right to Die Debate which provided a forum for considering issues individuals
face when their health or the health of a loved one fails
The Friends of KU Women's Studies exists to increase awareness and understanding
of the philosophies, values, and activities uniquely applicable to women and
girls and to promote the growth of the Women's Studies Program at the University
of Kansas.
