WS 396. Studies in: Women and Science (3.0):
This course seeks to introduce students to scientific products, scientific
inquiry, and scientific careers as they have been studied by feminist scholars.
We will explore the history of sexist and gendered images in science, and
how those images have been used to justify women’s oppression from science.
We will also explore recent sexism in the products of science. From here,
we will inquire into whether there is a women’s way of knowing and if
scientific inquiry can be saved from sexism. The second part of the class
will trace the process of becoming a scientist from elementary school through
college graduation and employment. Specifically, we will focus on the “scientific
pipeline” and the barriers that women face throughout the scientific
career trajectory.
